Whit Grant Fraser is a renowned Canadian journalist, broadcaster, and author and former head of the Canadian Polar Commission. Thanks to his wife Mary Simon, he is the 56th and current viceregal consort of Canada. Whit published True North Rising, a memoir of his work in Arctic communities in 2018, and in 2022, he published his second book, Cold Edge of Heaven, a historical fiction novel set in Dundas Harbour and based on some actual events.
Fraser began his journalism career as a reporter for CKEC-FM in New Glasgow. In 1967, Whit joined CBC News as a reporter in Frobisher Bay and later in Yellowknife. In 1989, he became the host of This Country, a six-hour nightly program on the CBC’s new all-news channel CBC Newsworld which covered regional news from across the country. In 1991, Whit left CBC when he was appointed by the federal government as chair of the Canadian Polar Commission, a federal government agency that was devoted to territorial and Arctic issues.
In the 2000s, Fraser served as a chief operating officer of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, a nonprofit organization in Canada that represents over 65,000 Inuit across Inuit Nunangat and the rest of Canada.
